A gift without a conventional brief
I made this bilingual website as a gift for my friend Dorota, one of the earliest Polish Hunting Spaniel breeders. I had been suggesting for three years that she needed a site, but she is an accountant by profession, far removed from marketing or web design, and almost determinedly un-self-promotional despite everything she has contributed to the breed.
She would never have commissioned or specified a website herself. The task was therefore to recognise what deserved to exist, then create the brief as well as the site.
Giving the kennel a proper website
I built the content from an article Dorota had written for the breed magazine, what I had learnt from knowing her for seven years, and the history that deserved to be recorded. Because she already receives more puppy enquiries than she needs, the site did not need to operate as a sales funnel. Instead, it gives her kennel, foundation dogs, 27 litters, publications and several important firsts in the breed’s development a proper home online.
The active build took about four hours. I conceived it on Saturday afternoon and had it ready the following day, in time for the tenth anniversary of the breed’s official recognition.
Skills in this project
| Skill | What it involved |
|---|---|
| Brief creation | Turned a long-standing unmet need into a clear purpose and scope. |
| Research synthesis | Combined a historical article, first-hand knowledge and breed context into a coherent record. |
| Bilingual writing | Developed and adapted the content in Polish and English. |
| Information architecture | Organised the kennel’s dogs, litters, publications and breed milestones into a clear site structure. |
| AI-assisted implementation | Used AI to accelerate drafting, translation support and the static site build. |
| Web publishing | Handled GitHub Pages, the Polish domain, DNS, metadata, indexing and SEO. |
